Zanzibar and Swahili Coast
Zanzibar Archipelago & Swahili Coast
The Zanzibar archipelago with its warm turquoise waters, white sand beaches, rainbow coral reefs, and marine diversity makes for world-class diving and snorkeling. It has a rich cultural history, beautiful architecture, fabulous cuisine, unusual wildlife, and great forest walks. There are so many excellent beaches in Zanzibar, the neighboring islands, and on the Swahili Coast. The beaches are interspersed with small fishing villages and sleepy Swahili towns.
The heart of Zanzibar is historic Stone Town with Swahili and Islamic influences. Stone Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with a fascinating maze of narrow streets along with minarets, carved doorways, a 19th-century sultan’s palace, the old slave market, spice tours, and the childhood home of Queen’s Freddy Mercury.
Mainland Zanzibar is the most famous and popular destination for beach vacations. There are also many pristine beaches on Pemba and Mafia Islands and on the coast surrounding Dar es Salaam (Kilwa to the South and Pangani to the North) that are spectacular and off the beaten path.
